Around the house
10 ESL house activities

1. Household Item Bingo
Objective: Teach common household items (e.g., chair, table, bed).
Create bingo cards with pictures of household items.
Call out the item names and let the toddlers place a token on the corresponding picture.
The first one to complete a row or column shouts, “Bingo!”
2. Where is It?
Objective: Practice prepositions (e.g., on, under, in, beside).
Place household items around the room.
Say a sentence like, "Where is the book?" or "Where is the chair?"
The toddlers must respond by finding and pointing to the correct object, practicing prepositions in the process.
3. House Vocabulary Flashcards
Objective: Build vocabulary for rooms and objects in the house.
Show flashcards with pictures of different rooms (kitchen, bedroom, living room) or household objects (fridge, lamp, door).
Say the word aloud and have toddlers repeat it.
You can also turn this into a matching game, where they match words to pictures.
4. Simon Says – House Edition
Objective: Learn vocabulary and follow directions.
Play Simon Says using actions related to a house (e.g., “Simon says, touch the table” or “Simon says, sit on the couch”).
This helps with listening skills and learning furniture and room names.
5. Building Blocks House
Objective: Learn about building a house while practicing vocabulary.
Provide building blocks and encourage toddlers to create a simple house (e.g., a block for a door, a stack of blocks for walls).
As they build, say the name of the item (door, window, roof) and encourage the toddlers to repeat the words.
6. House Tour
Objective: Practice room names and locations in a house.
Take the toddlers on a “house tour” and say phrases like, "This is the kitchen," or "The bedroom is over here."
Let the toddlers repeat the room names after you. You can do this in different parts of the classroom or even at home.
7. Hide and Seek with Toys
Objective: Practice object names and locations.
Hide a toy somewhere in the room and say, "Where is the toy? Is it under the table? Is it behind the door?"
Let the toddlers search and practice vocabulary for locations.
8. Match the Items
Objective: Learn the uses of different household items.
Use picture cards of household items and cards with their uses (e.g., a card with a picture of a broom and one that says "cleaning").
Toddlers need to match the item with its function or location (e.g., "This is a spoon. What do we do with a spoon?").
9. House Puzzle
Objective: Teach house-related vocabulary while building a puzzle.
Create or use a puzzle that depicts a house (rooms, furniture).
As the toddlers put the puzzle together, ask questions like, "Where does the table go?" or "Is the bed in the living room?"
10. House Sounds Game
Objective: Learn sounds associated with house items.
Play sounds related to household items (e.g., doorbell ringing, vacuum running, a dog barking).
Have the toddlers guess the sound and associate it with the right object or room in the house.
These games combine movement, fun, and learning, making them perfect for toddlers to learn English while interacting with common house-related vocabulary!
