Weather ESL Games

Here are 10 engaging and educational ESL (English as a Second Language) weather games for kids that will help them learn weather-related vocabulary while having fun:
1. Weather Flashcard Race
How to Play:
Spread out weather-related flashcards (sun, rain, snow, clouds, etc.) on the floor. Call out a weather condition, and the kids must race to find the correct flashcard. The first to grab the right card wins.
Skills Practiced: Vocabulary recognition, listening, and quick thinking.
2. Weather Word Hunt
How to Play:
Hide weather-related flashcards or pictures around the classroom or outdoor space. Give the kids clues in English (e.g., "Find the picture of snow" or "Look for the sunny card"). They must find and bring back the correct cards.
Skills Practiced: Listening comprehension, vocabulary, and movement.
3. Weather Bingo
How to Play:
Create bingo cards with different weather conditions (e.g., sunny, rainy, windy, snowy). As you call out a weather condition, the children mark it on their cards. The first one to complete a row or column shouts "Bingo!"
Skills Practiced: Listening, weather vocabulary, and recognition.
4. Weather Charades
How to Play:
Write down various weather conditions on pieces of paper (e.g., sunny, foggy, stormy, windy). One child draws a card and acts out the weather condition without speaking while others try to guess the weather in English.
Skills Practiced: Vocabulary, speaking, and acting.
5. Weather Forecasting Role-Play
How to Play:
Divide the kids into pairs or small groups. One child is a "weather reporter," and the others are viewers. The reporter must describe the weather for the day or for a specific location using weather-related vocabulary (e.g., "Today, it’s sunny with a chance of rain."). Afterward, the kids can switch roles.
Skills Practiced: Speaking, listening, and vocabulary usage.
6. Weather Simon Says
How to Play:
Play "Simon Says" with weather-related actions. For example, "Simon says, pretend you're a snowflake," or "Simon says, spin like the wind." If you don’t say "Simon says," and the child follows the command, they’re out.
Skills Practiced: Listening, movement, and vocabulary.
7. Weather Pictionary
How to Play:
Write down weather-related words (rain, snow, sunny, etc.) on pieces of paper. One child draws a picture representing the weather while the others try to guess the word in English. Use a timer to make it more exciting.
Skills Practiced: Vocabulary, creativity, and guessing.
8. What’s the Weather Today?
How to Play:
Ask the kids to look out the window or describe the weather they see in the classroom or outside (e.g., "It’s cloudy," "It’s raining," "It’s sunny and warm"). Then, have them use complete sentences like, "Today is sunny," or "It’s a rainy day."
Skills Practiced: Speaking, sentence structure, and vocabulary.
9. Weather Story Dice
How to Play:
Create or print weather-themed dice with pictures or words (rain, wind, sun, cloud, etc.). Kids take turns rolling the dice and then create short stories using the weather words that come up. For example, if a child rolls "sunny," "windy," and "cloud," they might say, "It was sunny and windy, and the clouds were moving quickly."
Skills Practiced: Vocabulary, creativity, and speaking.
10. Cloudy or Sunny?
How to Play:
Stand at the front of the class and describe various weather conditions using simple sentences. For example, "It’s very hot and bright outside. What’s the weather like?" The children must raise their hands if they think it's "sunny" or sit down if they think it's "cloudy." You can also use flashcards to reinforce the weather terms.
Skills Practiced: Listening comprehension, vocabulary, and decision-making.
These ESL weather games will not only help kids learn and reinforce weather vocabulary, but they will also practice their speaking, listening, and comprehension skills in an engaging, interactive way!
